Le Petit Mas is a romantic hillside cottage that formerly served as the gatehouse to the tiny hamlet of Le Roux, a "site classé" due its fascinating history and location.  Built in the 17th Century as a silk-producing factory, Le Petit Mas has been brought up to date but maintains every bit of its extraordinary antiquity and charm.

The house consists of a large farmhouse kitchen with dining area, cozy livingroom with sleeping alcove, spacious full bath and one full bedroom.  Guests enter via the wonderful country kitchen, rustic in appearance but entirely updated with modern appliances, cookware and all the utensils needed to prepare elaborate or simple meals with the excellent local food products. Two large tables allow for various seating options; guests can also share meals outside on the dining terrace.

Descending a half-flight of stairs from the kitchen, you'll reach the living room, furnished with two plush sofas, a large coffee table and television for cozy evenings indoors. A double bed is tucked into a sleeping alcove behind one of the sofas. Accessed from the livingroom, the bathroom is immaculate and spacious, including a full tub with shower attachment, large vanity sink, toilet and armoire. Quality bath linens and pool towels are provided.

A small hallway library, stocked with regional guides and maps of local hikes and villages, gives way to the main bedroom. Furnished with a high quality king sized bed, chest of drawers and two large armoires, the room features a beautiful lookout on the surrounding countryside, with picturesque Lussan in the distance.

Enjoy stunning views of the local sunflower fields and vineyards from one of many private terraces and garden areas, equipped with lawn furniture for sunbathing and relaxing, and dining furniture for warm weather meals taken outside. A small and deeply refreshing dipping pool is cut into the rock face behind the house.
  • Charming cottage-like home tucked into a cluster of fascinating stone ruins.
  • Exquisite views of countryside and village beyond.
  • Multiple terraces for sunbathing, dining and relaxing.
  • Small private dipping pool.
  • One bedroom with king bed; high quality linens throughout.
  • Second bed (double) in sleeping alcove in living room.
  • Well equipped farm kitchen.
  • Central heating, microwave, washing machine, television, telephone.
  • About 900 square feet.
Let Petit Mas is located 3 km from the village of Lussan, in Western Provence, in the Gard.  Just behind the house is an extensive canyon-like geological formation of limestone caves and miles of oak forest, excellent for hiking and exploring. The Gard is one of the most peaceful parts of southern France, characterized by quaint towns, small farms, vineyards, and fields of lavender and sunflowers.  Exquisite local fruits, vegetables, honey, wines and cheeses fill the nearby farmers markets. Avignon is 45 km away, and the Ducal town of Uzès, with its shops, restaurants and famous Saturday open-air market, is a fifteen-minute drive.  There are several scenic rivers nearby, including the Cèze and the Ardèche, popular for river-kayaking.

General Location Map

We’ve been coming to France in the summers for the past 5 years and truly have loved our time here. We’ve stayed in many different types of accommodation but have gravitated to gites from small hotels and maison d’hotes over the past couple of years. Le Petit Mas has given us a model from which to take our thinking to the next level and for this we thank you.
Your home has helped us understand much better what we’re looking for- the rural setting with a view, the simplicity and authenticity, the unique outdoor areas of the terraces and ruins from which to enjoy the weather and views and a location with good weather and access. And Le Gard seemed very right to us. “Le Grotto” provided a special and unique use of the water bassin – a wonderful place for a cooling dip.
Thank you for the bottle of wine- we enjoyed it so much that we stopped in to the winery in St. Hillaire-d’Ozilhan on our way to Lagrasse on Saturday and bought a few bottles to enjoy here.
In short, a perfect stay and how many times in one’s life can you say that?
