Bordered by cherry and apricot orchards, vineyards and olive groves, this small renovated country home, a mile from the village of Cavillargues, will delight guests with the lush natural landscape for which Provence is so well loved. Guests in April and early May may experience the marvelous blossoming cherry trees, with ripe and edible berries appearing in May and June, fragrant lavender throughout July and August, and roses year round.

Le Mazet is an independent two-story stone house, sharing a large property with an 18th century farmhouse. The south-facing "mazet" sits in a large flowering garden; walls of stone and stucco keep it well insulated from heat and cold. An expansive shaded outdoor terrace is fully equipped for al fresco dining and living, with a a wood-fired barbecue oven and refreshing pool.

French doors from the terrace open into a small bright kitchen, fully equipped for your cooking needs. From here a flight of steps leads to a bathroom with shower. The mezzanine level just above serves as an additional sitting area, or sleeping area for children. On the second story are the two spacious bedrooms, each with a double bed, desk and closet. Rooms are bright and airy, with country views, high ceilings and hardwood floors.

The village of Cavillargues, typical of this region, bears fascinating remnants of its prehistoric and Roman past. Today it is a charming village hub with all basic commerces, centered around a 17th century château. Picturesque small towns such as Uzès and Bagnols-sur-Cèze are within a fifteen-minute drive. On the way to Uzès, St. Quentin-la-Poterie is an interesting side trip, with numerous artisan potters opening their studios to passersby. The magnificent Roman aqueduct, Pont-du-Gard, is 15 miles from Cavillargues and provides an idyllic place to swim, hike, and kayak. The cathedral-like bamboo forests of Anduze provide a welcome respite during the hot summer months.
Nearby Avignon boasts the largest gothic palace in the world, the Palais des Papes, as well as the enchanting "Pont d'Avignon" and myriad cultural attractions. The delightful town of Nîmes also makes for a fine visit, with its Roman arena, magnificent gardens, and Maison Carrée, originally built in 16 BC for the sons of Augustus Caesar.

General Location Map

We had a wonderful time at the Mazet.  It's close to  several famous examples of Roman architecture (Orange, the amphitheater in Nimes, Pont du Gard) as well as Avignon with its famous bridge, Papal Palace and July theater festival.  We loved the Saturday market in Uzes and walking in the "bambouseraie" in Anduze and the vineyards and woods that surround the house.
The totally natural environment is shared with varied colorful birds.  What a photographer's paradise! The Mazet was cool and comfortable even in hot weather.  Michele offered us homemade preserves.  Jean welcomed us with a nice bottle of local wine and invited us to a barbecue one evening.  We felt right at home and would love to go back.  G.K. (Providence, RI)

Our French experience began right away:  Jean greeted us with a bottle of chilled wine, a refreshing Cote du Rhone rose so delicious that I planned to buy more in town.  It didn't take long for us to settle in comfortably.  Jean and Michele acquainted us with the surrounding area, and Jean arranged a tasting for us in a Chateauneuf du Pape wine cellar.  The setting is ideal:  a  calm, wooded
area also featuring a magnificent flower garden.  S.W. (Annapolis, MD)

I was familiar with Paris, but fell in love with the Languedoc after discovering the Mazet.  I am from Montreal and took a direct flight to Marseille, where I rented a car.  An hour later I was sitting by the pool with a cold drink in my hand.  Avoiding going through Paris simplifies travel from the States or Canada.  I really enjoyed the regional Roman architecture and took several walks in the surrounding vineyards.   Jean and Michele are very kind and I've stayed in touch with them.  I really hope to return to the Mazet.  N.B. (Montreal, Quebec)

We immediately fell under the Mazet's spell with its charming shaded patio and large swimming pool.  Jean and Michele greeted us warmly with a bottle of wine.  They gave us the freedom to explore on our own,  yet, when asked, they provided helpful suggestions about "must see" regional attractions,  since they know the area so well.  H.B.
