Description

This charming, comfortably appointed 1½-story stone house is part of a scenic old farm that has been entirely restored. Quiet, picturesque grounds include a ponds, gardens, a fountain, play areas and private "al fresco" dining areas.

The front door leads directly into the south-facing living room and kitchen, which open to a pleasant, flowery private patio. The living room features oak beams and old tiles, with the comfort of a heated floor. Two big windows look east and west to the old trees and peaceful countryside.

Separated from the living room by a counter, the small kitchen is equipped with a dishwasher, an electric four-burner stove, a microwave, and a refrigerator; a wood stove adds warmth and coziness to the room. There is also a small fireplace and a dining table seating six.

An old stone staircase leads to the second floor with two bedrooms, each with an ensuite modern private bathroom with shower and toilet. There are twin beds in the West bedroom and a double bed in the East bedroom. Bed linens and towels are provided.

Winter heating is provided free of charge for weekly rentals.

Nearby Attractions

Baulette is outside the village of Saché, where the imaginative sculptor Alexander Calder lived. The town boasts a one-star Michelin Guide restaurant called "l"Auberge du XIIe siècle" (a fabulous value). Less than 4 miles from Azay-le-Rideau, Baulette is also near the forest, château and gardens of Villandry. The local château serves as the museum of the great writer Honoré de Balzac.  Among the area's other attractions are Chateau d’Ussé, which inspired the tale of Sleeping Beauty, and "La Deviniére", the house where François Rabelais was born. Baulette is in close proximity to the superb Loire wine towns of Chinon, Bourgueil, Vouvray and Saumur Champigny. Chinon was once the capital of England under Henri II and Richard the Lionheart after his father’s death.

Activities include wine tasting, hiking, biking, golf, fishing and crafts, from basket weaving to cooking and cheese-making. Great restaurants. Charming and helpful owners.

Our hosts, Patrick and Benny, were great. They took excellent care of us and were very pleasant. Their property is lovely and the location is very convenient. We had some trouble with our rental car, and they went out of their way to help us deal with the company. They also took time to show us a winery and took us to a nearby medieval town.
