Description
This tall, narrow townhouse is located at the end of a quaint street leading up to the Roman Amphitheater, Les Arènes d’Arles. The house, ca. 1400 sq. ft., is arranged on four floors. Restored to perfection, its classic Provençal character is seen throughout with old exposed wood beams in high ceilings and original exposed stonewalls.
On the first floor, an ancient wooden door opens to the living room. Like the rest of the house, the room is furnished with carefully chosen local antiques, giving a sense of comfort and elegance. From the couch, one can enjoy a close up view of the Roman Amphitheater through the large French door at street level. There is a dining table seating four and two dressers containing all the necessary tableware as well as a small stereo system. The owners have recently installed air conditioning in the main living areas of the apartment.
An alcove at the back of the living room contains a kitchenette with sink, cabinets, two electric burners, combination microware/oven, and a miniature refrigerator. A staircase leads to a well-lit basement with full size refrigerator/freezer, washer/dryer, empty shelves for storage, and a guest toilet with sink. The kitchen is currently undergoing a full modern renovation.
Up a winding staircase is the first of two sleeping levels. The steps were restored using ancient Provençal tiles. In the stylish second floor bedroom there is a queen size four-poster bed, two large windows, and TV. At one end is an open bath area with claw foot tub, sink and antique desk. Private toilet room. On the third floor, a second elegant bedroom has a similar layout and furnishings, with a comfortable antique queen bed, television, open bathroom area, and separate toilet.

Among the many points of interest in Arles are the Alyscamps burial grounds, the Roman Theater, and the Roman baths of Constantine. The beautiful, un-crowded beaches of Saintes-Marie-de-la-Mer are a short, enjoyable 25 minute drive away, through the Camargue region with beautiful sites and activities such as horse back riding and bird watching. The annual International Photography Encounters (*Rencontres Internationales de la Photographie"), the Epic Film Restival (*Le Festival Peplum") and many other exciting events take place in Arles during the summer months. Clean and well-maintained public pools are within walking distance of the home.

The townhouse is excellent for exploring Provence, and the furnishings are above average. Laurent, who was listed as having the key, was as helpful as possible, given that he speaks little English. More helpful was the man who owns the boutique directly across the street from the townhouse. He was really hospitible. I would book the townhouse again and would recommend it in spite of the owner's poor attitude about the unavailability of wifi. France-Homestyle was very helpful. Heard about it from Rick Steves' book on Provence.
