Description

This charming one-bedroom apartment in a classic Lyonnais Renaissance buiding provides exceptional accommodation in the heart of old Lyon.  Enjoying spectacular views from nearly every room, guests will be treated to a dynamic perspective on this lovely historical area of the city.

Located on the 5th and 6th floors, the apartment is reached by a winding stone stairwell in the building's turret (there is elevator access to the 4th floor).  Past the front door and up a few steps is the bedroom, furnished with queen-sized bed, closet and chest of drawers.  Windows on both sides overlook Vieux Lyon's romantic rooftops and timeworn monuments.  A small wooden staircase in the bedroom leads to a mezzanine-level bathroom with toilet, sink and shower.  To reach the living and dining spaces, you ascend a few more steps in the main stairwell.  Even brighter and more extraordinary views are had from this upper level, including the dramatic Basilica of Fourvières.  The living room is furnished with a loveseat that sleeps one extra person, television with CD/DVD player, sound system, and a small office nook with desk and wi-fi internet.  The adjacent kitchenette is equipped with a flat electric cooktop, oven, dishwasher, refrigerator/freezer and all the basic appliances and utensils one needs to create great meals.  Sitting on the bar stools at the small kitchen table, you can admire the view of  the beautiful Gothic cathedral of St. Jean through two south-facing windows.

Nearby Attractions

Reached by one of three footbridges crossing the Saône river onto the west bank, Vieux Lyon is classified as a World Heritage site, and one of the largest Renaissance quarters in Europe.  Inspired by the architecture and richly colored façades of Florence, this neighborhood is full of secret treasures.  The streets are lined with beautifully preserved mansions, or "hotels", some dating back to the late 1400s.  Be sure to explore the "traboules", discreet tunnelled passageways between mansions that originally served to protect the local-spun silks transported by workers during the manufacturing process.
Exceptional monuments in the area include the gothic St. Jean cathedral, on the bank of the Saône, with its fascinating 14th century astronomical clock, and the medieval church of St. Paul, an excellent spot for concerts owing to its fine acoustics.  For more ancient history, visit the vestiges of a Roman city in the archeological park in Fourvières, featuring a beautifully-preserved amphitheatre.
