Description
Tucked between the Dordogne River and steep, dramatic stone cliffs, the village of La Roque-Gageac is the picturesque location for this completely renovated 3000 sq.ft stone house. Dating from the Middle Ages, the Dordogne Village House is the oldest in the village. Ancient stone steps gently ascending the hill lead directly to the house. Or park by the Mairie and walk straight to the entrance of the house on flat ground. This rental house offers an excellent opportunity to savor the natural beauty of this distinct area of France, as well as a truly authentic medieval village. La Roque Gageac is complete with quality restaurants, a weekly outdoor market, bakery/pastry shop, café, and more, all within a short walk from the house.
On the mid-level of this three-story house, a rustic wooden door set in thick, ochre-colored stonewalls leads into a cozy courtyard. Off the courtyard the large, completely remodeled kitchen with massive stone fireplace houses a wood stove for heating, a long dining table, new cooking range, and American style refrigerator. It is completely equipped for convenient meal preparation and is adjacent to a private terrace shaded by a vine-covered arbor. Also on this floor, is a sitting room with sofa, other comfortable seating, and another ancient stone fireplace, much like the one in the kitchen. Separate toilet room with sink. A pleasant, river view terrace is accessed from this floor. There is a convenient DSL connection, an I-pod port for stereo music, radio, TV, and free international calls. Washing machine.
An open wooden, spiral staircase leads to the top floor where there is a master bedroom with exposed stonewalls and new king size bed. A second bedroom next-door has two twin beds. Both bedrooms share a shower room with toilet. A landing separates these two rooms. Below the main floor, on the lowest level, there is another double bedroom and spacious bathroom with tub, bidet, toilet and sink. The second bedroom on this floor has twin beds and sitting area.
Nearby Attractions
Sheltered beneath steep cliffs, La Roque-Gageac, is deservedly designated one of “les Plus Beaux Village de France”. In medieval times, it was an important fortified village and later saw the addition of renaissance manors, including the Manoir de Tarde. It has retained its authentic character over the centuries, featuring attractive narrow stone streets, and interesting homes, churches, and public buildings. There is a weekly market, fabulous restaurants, a pizzeria, and a bakery/pastry shop. For recreation, there are river beaches, public pool and canoes for rent. Tennis courts and golf course are close by. Completely sheltered by the cliffs, there is an area where the semi-tropical plant life survives year-round, even in the winter months. A walking path that runs behind the buildings at the foot of the cliff provides great views. There are also pre-historic Troglodyte dwellings nearby.
Several other villages in the area are well worth a visit. Beynac, about two miles down the road, features the Chateau de Beynac perched high atop a huge rock, overlooking the valley and other castle-topped hills. A steep footpath, known locally as the Caminal del Panieraire, leads from the bottom of the village through rows of renaissance houses dating from the 15th to the 17th centuries. Another nearby town, Sarlat, dates from the 9th century when a Benedictine abbey was founded. Most of the townhouses still in existence date from the renaissance. Sarlat’s old village has many places of interest, including the Cathedrale of St. Sacerdos, the Maison de la Boetie, the Hotel de Maleville, and many charming shops, galleries, and restaurants. Domme is a Bastide or fortified market town dating from the 13th century. Be sure to visit on market days when you can find homegrown produce, cheeses, cured hams, and foie gras, the regional delicacy. In and around Les Eyzies, 18 miles from La Roque-Gageac, there are a series of major prehistoric sites, including a group of caves featuring pre-historic cave paintings, all open to the public.
