Description

Tucked between the serpentine Dordogne River and a wall of dramatic limestone cliffs, the village of La Roque-Gageac is the picturesque location for this completely renovated 3000 sq.ft. stone house. Dating from the  Middle Ages, the Dordogne Village House is reportedly the oldest in the village, offering guests an opportunity to savor not only the magnificent natural beauty of this distinctive part of France, but a taste of life in an authentic medieval village.

Ancient stone steps ascend through the village directly to the three-story house. A rustic wooden door set in thick, ochre-colored stone walls opens into a cozy courtyard, giving way to the entrance of the house through the kitchen. Completely remodeled, the spacious kitchen features a massive stone fireplace with an embedded wood stove, long dining table, new cooking range, American style refrigerator, and elaborate equipment for meal preparation.

Another large fireplace with an embedded woodstove attracts guests into the sitting lounge, also on this floor. Large oak beams, sofas and armchairs create a rustic and cozy feel. Double French doors open to a lovely private terrace with a vine-covered arbor and views of the river. For guests' convenience, there is a DSL connection, an I-pod port for stereo music, radio, TV, and free international calls. Washing machine, independent WC.

A wood spiral staircase leads to the top floor with a master bedroom, furnished with a new king bed, and a second bedroom with two twin beds; the rooms are separated by a landing and share a shower room with toilet.

Two more double bedrooms are found below the main floor, on the lowest level, along with a spacious bathroom with tub, bidet, toilet and sink.

Nearby Attractions

Sheltered beneath steep cliffs, La Roque-Gageac is designated one of “Les Plus Beaux Villages de France”. In medieval times, it was an important fortified village and later saw the addition of renaissance manors, including the Manoir de Tarde. It has retained its authentic character over the centuries, with narrow, sloping cobblestone streets and stairwells forming the backdrop for quaint village homes, churches, public buildings and even an exotic tropical garden, kept protected by the cliffs. La Roque-Gageac has a weekly market, good restaurants, a pizzeria, and a bakery/pastry shop. Don't pass up a barge trip down the Dordogne river, or rent kayaks in order to experience the extraordinary river views of neighboring perched castles and villages. A walking path that runs behind the buildings at the foot of the cliff provides public access to pre-historic Troglodyte dwellings.

Several other villages in the area are well worth a visit. Beynac, about two miles down the road, features the Chateau de Beynac perched high atop a huge rock, overlooking the valley and other castle-topped hills. A steep footpath, known locally as the Caminal del Panieraire, leads from the bottom of the village through rows of renaissance houses dating from the 15th to the 17th centuries. Another nearby town, Sarlat, dates from the 9th century when a Benedictine abbey was founded. Most of the townhouses still in existence date from the renaissance. Sarlat’s old village has many places of interest, including the Cathedrale of St. Sacerdos, the Maison de la Boetie, the Hotel de Maleville, and many charming shops, galleries, and restaurants. Domme is a Bastide or fortified market town dating from the 13th century. Be sure to visit on market days when you can find homegrown produce, cheeses, cured hams, and foie gras, the regional delicacy. In and around Les Eyzies, 18 miles from La Roque-Gageac, there are a series of major prehistoric sites, including a group of caves featuring pre-historic cave paintings, all open to the public.
