Description
This charming one bedroom cottage, part of a cluster of nineteenth-century farmhouses renovated as country gites, faces the Vezere river and La Roque St. Christophe, an impressive prehistoric stone cliff. The lounge, dining and kitchen areas all feature a beautiful outlook through the three patio doors leading to the raised wooden deck. The kitchen is fully equipped for a pleasant stay, including fan oven, microwave, refrigerator and gas range. Attractive antiques and a large stone fireplace adorn the very comfortable lounge/living room. From here a small corridor leads past fitted wardrobes to a pretty bedroom for two, equipped with an electronically operated bed that offers individual spinal support. Off the bedroom is a large "wet room" bathroom that includes a shower and toilet. This gite has the added benefit of being handicapped accessible.
Nearby Attractions
Steep rock cliffs and plunging valleys with limestone caves are a hallmark of the Dordogne valley. The picturesque geographical features conceal several important, fascinating pre-historic cave sites, all within a thirty-minute drive of Le Manoir. Lascaux II features faithfully replicated cave drawings, while La Roque Saint Christophe and Roc de Cazelle depict all aspects of the life of prehistoric man. A few miles from the house, Les Eyzies houses the Musée National de Préhistoire in a 16th century castle. Other grottoes such as Font de Gaume and Combarelle remain open to the public and feature the original paintings of reindeer, bison, and human figures. The caves of Grand Roc and Villars feature amazing underground rock formations spiked with stalactites and stalagmites along with prehistoric cave drawings are a must see. The deep caves of Proumeyssac, known as the crystal cathedral, feature more amazing calcite formations.
Besides Europe’s most important prehistoric caves, the region boasts some of the finest medieval architecture in towns such as Sarlat, Cordes, and Domme. Sarlat’s old town has cobbled streets and is traffic free. Fascinating buildings include the Cathédrale of St. Sacerdos, the Maison de la Boètie, and the Hotel de Maleville. Be sure to visit on Saturday market days when you can find lovely home grown produce, cheeses, local honey, and foie gras, the regional delicacy. Sarlat also has many charming shops, galleries, and restaurants. There are also numerous interesting castle sites in the vicinity. Château de Castelnaud features an interesting display of armor and medieval life. This rural area of southwest France offers a wealth of natural beauty, ancient caves and grottos, medieval villages, and excellent local cuisine.
