Description

Perfectly situated for a dream holiday in the Dordogne's “golden triangle” between Beynac, Domme and medieval Sarlat, Maison de Maitre overlooks the picturesque Dordogne River valley. In 1860, a war hero returning from Napoleon’s army built the present home on existing medieval cellars. Since then, it had been in this same family until the present owners purchased it five years ago and lovingly restored it. The large swimming pool, filled with fresh clear water kept clean by the latest technology, is set in a sunny terrace surrounded by fragrant flowerbeds. An ancient vine covered staircase leads to the upper terrace where you can enjoy panoramic vistas of the valley below while reclining on comfortable outdoor furniture, barbecuing, or enjoying a meal. You’ll find everything you need here for a truly relaxing  vacation.

The grand entrance has a graceful curved stone staircase leading to the front door and the welcoming entry hall.  Adjacent to this, a sitting room features high ceilings, tall, shuttered windows, and a mixture of English and French antiques. Furnished with grace and charm, it has comfortable sofas and chairs, colorful area rugs and a classic wood-burning fireplace. There is a large TV set with English language satellite link, DVD player, wireless broadband Internet connection, and telephone. Across the hall, the spacious dining room seats ten in high style.

From the hall one can enter the kitchen with its unique vaulted ceiling that keeps it cool on hot days yet cozy in the winter. There is an American style refrigerator, cooking range, microwave, large dishwasher, washing machine, and fully equipped cabinets with a full range of culinary equipment, china and plenty of room for several cooks. The large kitchen table and a bookcase with recipe and gardening books, novels, maps, and guidebooks, make for a comfortable gathering and workspace. From the kitchen, a rustic oak door leads to one of the terraces with barbeque, antique wall hung sink, and glorious dining terrace with views across the valley.

An interior curved staircase leads to five bedrooms, one with twin beds and the others with very comfortable high quality king or queen size beds. Two of the bedrooms are particularly spacious with a sofa in each. All the bedrooms have en-suite bathrooms with showers and toilets. There are also two separate toilet rooms. Towels, robes hairdryers and pool towels are provided.

Friendly and knowledgeable English speaking owners live in a completely separate wing of the house with private entrance.  They can be a helpful resource, if needed.

Nearby Attractions

This is a picturesque and uniquely beautifulrural area. For recreation, there are river beaches with canoes for rent and tennis courts and golf course nearby. It is easy to rent horses which can be ridden through the forests and river valley. Hot air balloons are a great way to explore the region from above. The property is half an hour from Les Eyzies and the fascinating cave paintings at 'Font de Gaume' and Lascaux II in Montignac. Nestled in the Vézère Valley, this was the birthplace of modern European man, thirty thousand years ago. A mile and a half away, the restored medieval Château of Castelnaud is a destination in itself with displays of armor and medieval life, all within an authentic castle.

Beynac is a village set along the river just below the castle. Known as one of France’s most beautiful villages it was featured in the popular film "Chocolat", a few years ago, . starring Johnny Depp and France’s own Juliette Binoche. Just upriver from Beynac dom’t miss the smaller village of La Roque-Gageac, a village that sits at the base of a perpendicular cliff along the river.

Mediaeval Sarlat dates from the 9th century when a Benedictine abbey was founded. Most of the townhouses still in existence date from the renaissance. Sarlat’s old town has cobbled streets and is traffic free. Fascinating buildings include the Cathedrale of St. Sacerdos, the Maison de la Boetie, the Hotel de Maleville. Be sure to visit on market days when you can find homegrown produce, cheeses, cured hams, and foie gras, the regional delicacy. There are many charming shops, galleries, and restaurants. The town provides street entertainment during the summer and many festivals throughout the year.

We had a wonderful time. The chateau has a great location and ambiance. There were a wealth of things to do and places to visit in the nearby area. It was also a great place to relax in. And having the Tour de France come by was a special treat!
