Nearby Attractions
Le Moustier is a pre-historic site located between the towns of Les Eyzies-de-Tayac and Montignac. The local boulangerie, general store and restaurants are a brief stroll away. Just across the beautiful Vézère river valley is La Roque St. Christophe, seen from the house. This grand limestone cliff, one kilometer long and over 80 meters high, was first inhabited over 55,000 years ago, then modified to serve as a fort during the middle ages all the way until the beginning of the Renaissance. A variety of guided visits detailing the epic history of the region take place regularly. Les Eyzies, at ten kilometers away, is a wonderful place to learn about pre-historic times and peoples. The Grottes du Font-de-Gaume include cave painting and etchings dated at 17,000 years that are breathtaking to witness firsthand. The village of Montignac boasts the reknowned Lascaux cave site, a faithful reproduction of which is still open to the public.
In addition to the fascinating history of the Perigord, this is also a region loved for its culinary excellence. Foie gras, black truffles, walnuts and other classic delicacies of French cuisine originated here and there is no shortage of excellent restaurants in which to sample them. Other fun activities to participate in locally include canoeing, castle visits, rockclimbing, hot-air ballooning and river swimming in the summertime. Beautiful villages such as Sarlat, Domme, Beynac and La Roque-Gageac are accessible within a few minutes by car.
