Description
This lovely one-bedroom gite, named for the delicious Perigourdin walnuts that were once cultivated here, is situated in the front courtyard of a charming complex of rural cottages. With natural terracotta tiles and original stone walls throughout, the apartment stays cool in the summer and is warmed up in the winter and cooler evenings by a wood-burning stove and fireplace. The cozy lounge, featuring ancient oak ceiling beams, is attractively furnished with pretty antiques, and includes a satellite TV and home cinema system for relaxed entertainment while on vacation. The kitchen is equipped with gas range, fan oven, microwave and fridge. One may take meals indoors or out, on the attractive private patio with barbecue. The lovely bedroom, sleeping two, is full of light and features hardwood floors and a large en-suite bathroom equipped with shower and WC. A door from the bedroom leads directly to the pretty swimming pool, carved from local sandstone. This apartment has been carefully thought out to provide level access throughout for the assisted handicapped.
Nearby Attractions
Le Moustier is a pre-historic site located between the towns of Les Eyzies-de-Tayac and Montignac. The local boulangerie, general store and restaurants are a brief stroll away. Just across the beautiful Vézère river valley is La Roque St. Christophe, seen from the house. This grand limestone cliff, one kilometer long and over 80 meters high, was first inhabited over 55,000 years ago, then modified to serve as a fort during the middle ages all the way until the beginning of the Renaissance. A variety of guided visits detailing the epic history of the region take place regularly. Les Eyzies, at ten kilometers away, is a wonderful place to learn about pre-historic times and peoples. The Grottes du Font-de-Gaume include cave painting and etchings dated at 17,000 years that are breathtaking to witness firsthand. The village of Montignac boasts the reknowned Lascaux cave site, a faithful reproduction of which is still open to the public.
In addition to the fascinating history of the Perigord, this is also a region loved for its culinary excellence. Foie gras, black truffles, walnuts and other classic delicacies of French cuisine originated here and there is no shortage of excellent restaurants in which to sample them. Other fun activities to participate in locally include canoeing, castle visits, rockclimbing, hot-air ballooning and river swimming in the summertime. Beautiful villages such as Sarlat, Domme, Beynac and La Roque-Gageac are accessible within a few minutes by car.
