Located on the coast near the historical town of Bayeux, this 18th century farmhouse in the hamlet of Vacqueville on a former dairy farm offers direct access from the farm to the landing site, Omaha Beach, on a coastal hiking trail. The beach itself is a striking silent memorial to the event. Nearby attractions include a tennis court, mini-golf, and 27 hole golf course.  On the property, table tennis, stationary bikes, outside seating area. The owner,  now retired from farming, is an avid gardener, always happy to exchange gardening tips.

This part of the Atlantic coast, sometimes called "Côte de Nacre", is best known as the site of the WWII landings of Allied Forces in 1944; Operation Overlord. There are British, German and American cemeteries and war museums at Bayeux, Caen, Cherbourg and Sainte-Mére Eglise — a fascinating "Musée des Troupes Aéroportées". Bayeux is a lovely old town with pedestrian streets whose 17th and 19th century buildings and churches escaped destruction during WWII. The Bayeux Tapestry, which recounts the Invasion of England by William the Conqueror, is a must-see.

“We are celebrating a birthday; please join us.”  Elisabeth gave directions to her farmhouse garden, then left us to settle into our lovely room.  As darkness settled over the French countryside, we found the party.  Strands of  lights, a long bounteous table, and the sound of  laughter created a magical scene.  The more than 20 guests welcomed us—strangers and non-French speakers.  Ferme de Vacqueville will forever remind us of  Normandy: quiet village lanes, haunting beaches, oceanside cafés, kind people.

We loved our simple country cottage. The visits to the D-Day beaches were all that I'd hoped to experience, and more. Henri, our guide, knew French people who were actually there on June 6, 1944, going about their business under the occupation of the Germans. His stories and his intimate knowledge of all the places --many off the beaten path--, made it all come alive for us. We did St. Michel. Henri helped us imagine how those people centuries ago cut the stones, carved them to fit precisely and hauled them up. In places they carved the cathedral right out of the existing rock. And everything so magnificent was done by hand.
